It shall be the policy of the Board of Directors, upon the recommendation of the superintendent, to approve request for naming school district properties.
This policy is designed to provide a procedure to ensure consistence in naming Burlington Community School District facilities; including gymnasiums, playing courts, media centers, ad in some cases, rooms, land, driveways (not city owned) and other forms of real property.
To ensure consistency, all recommendations for naming shall be made directly to the superintendent, with the final determination resting with the district Board of Education. The Superintendent, however, shall seek input through the following procedures:
The Superintendent shall appoint a subcommittee including: 1 central office administrator, the Supervisor of Facilities, the building principal, 1 teacher, 1 classified staff member, 2 community members, and the School Board Liaison for facilities, to identify all potential naming opportunities within each facility. The list of all potential naming opportunities shall remain on file in the Superintendent’s office.
When an individual or group proposes naming a specific facility or area, they will present in writing, their desire to the Superintendent who shall empanel the previously mentioned subcommittee to make a recommendation on the request including consideration of other names.
Ultimately, the final determination of naming shall rest with the Board of Education. They shall hold a public forum one meeting prior to the board meeting at which the name will be selected to seek citizen input on the names to be considered. In its deliberations, the board will consider with following types of names:
- Location Names – The name of a geographic area within the district’s boundaries.
- Personal Names – A person whose name is considered for selection will have made: A significant contribution to education or the greater common good, within the school district, within the state of Iowa, or within the nation.
- Functional Names – Any phrase or term that adequately identifies the primary function of the structure/real property (e.g. Administration Building). Wherever possible, the functional name shall encompass the activities carried out within the facility/real property. When the activities are diverse, the prominent activity should be selected as the functional name. Functional names can be combined with personal and location names.
