BHS Renovation Project

The Burlington Community School District (BCSD), in conjunction with our partners Bray  Architects and Construction Manager, Carl A. Nelson & Company, recently kicked off the high  school facilities assessment and master planning process. The facilities assessment will focus  on plumbing, HVAC, electrical systems, energy efficiency, building code analysis, health & safety, security, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, and traffic flow at our high school and other district facilities. Burlington High School opened 53 years ago in 1969 and received major additions in the early- and mid-1970s, early ’80s and most recently in 2013 with the addition of a tornado safe room.  

A Core Planning Team (CPT) has been established consisting of District Administration, Bray  Architects, and Construction Manager, Carl A. Nelson & Company. The CPT will meet multiple  times a month to evaluate and review the needs of the high school today and moving forward. 
Funding for the projects that will grow out of the District Administration’s master planning  process will come from two places, neither of which will affect the school district tax rate. The  two funding sources are ESSER (Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief) and  SAVE (Secure an Advance Vision for Education) funding. ESSER funding was established by  the Federal Government in 2020 for schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic. SAVE funding is a state program that must be utilized solely for school infrastructure purposes such as  construction, reconstruction, repair, demolition work, purchasing, or remodeling of  schoolhouses, stadiums, field houses, and bus garages.
